Farrah hadn’t realized she’d fallen asleep until she woke up, her head resting on Kale’s shoulder. It took her a second for the events of the past couple of days to come rushing back. Unfortunately it hadn’t all been a terrible dream. She lifted her head and rubbed her neck. Kale hadn’t moved, allowing her to sleep, and by the darkening color of the sky, she realized she’d slept for a couple of hours.
“Thanks for letting me sleep,” she said, her words coming slowly. She was so thirsty that she’d do almost anything for one water bottle and a toilet.
“No problem, you looked like you needed it,” Kale said. “Besides, it seems that I slept about a week’s worth the past two days.”
“And tortured me with your snoring.”
“Really?”
“No,” she said. “I hate what they did to you.”
He gave a brief nod, then was on his feet, peeking over the wall. “It’s time to get out of here.” Extending his hand, he pulled her up.
Farrah’s muscles throbbed as she stood, stiff from sitting on the stone ground for so long. Cursing her bare feet, she peered over the wall at the lights of the city spread before them; she’d almost forgotten an entire world existed outside their little terrace. The sky was nearly black.
“Do you think they’ve given up by now?” she asked.
“It’s hard to say,” Kale said, his voice quiet. “I plan to get you to the helicopter safely, fair lady, but in these types of situations plans don’t always go perfectly.”
She looked up at him. “I understand.” He was standing close enough to touch, though she figured it was because the terrace was small and they were about to sneak off of it.
So what he did next surprised her. His hand brushed her cheek, and he leaned down. His mouth touched hers, and before she knew it, he was kissing her, and she was kissing him back. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. His kiss deepened, and it was plain this was no pity kiss or we-might-die-any-minute kiss. It was an I’ve-been-wanting-to-do-this-a-long-time kiss.
After he pulled away, breathless, he kissed her one more time, and Farrah decided she didn’t care much what happened in the next little while.
“Stay close to me,” he whispered. “Don’t let yourself get separated, no matter what.”
She was still trying to make sense of his kiss, so she just nodded.
He climbed up on the wall and held out his hand. The climb for her was a bit trickier in a tight dress, but Farrah managed. Below the terrace, a roof protruded, and Kale motioned to it. Farrah nodded, silently telling him she understood.
He jumped, landed quietly, then turned toward her with his hand extended. She jumped less gracefully, but when Kale reached out to steady her, she knew she was safe. They crossed to another roof, and after a while, Farrah wasn’t even concentrating on the feats she was accomplishing as they made their way closer and closer to street level.
