Chapter One
Taylor
Cardboard boxes were scattered around my small apartment. The hardwood floor was the same color as the boxes, so it was difficult to differentiate between the two. I didnât have a lot of stuff to begin with, but that didnât make moving any easier.
The guys carried my furniture into the living roomâthe new couch I bought from Macyâs as well as the other pieces of my living room set. Their strong arms bulged as they carried the weight, and I broke a sweat just watching them.
Sara walked inside carrying two boxes. âShit, why is this so heavy?â
Right on the side in black permanent marker was the label BOOKS. âRead the label next time.â
Sara dropped the box on the ground, making a loud thud that nearly shook the apartment. She put her hands on her hips and tried to catch her breath.
âDude, donât drop my stuff. Youâll break everything.â
âYou canât break books.â
âSo you did read the label.â
She dodged the question by changing the subject. âWhat do you need these for? Youâre done with school, arenât you?â
âItâs always good to have them for a reference.â
âThatâs what Google and Wikipedia are for.â
âAs an academic, I donât use Wikipedia.â
Sara narrowed her eyes on me, calling bullshit with just a look.
âOkay, I use Wikipedia for everything. But donât tell anyone that.â
âThere you go.â
The guys finished unloading the truck, and after I gave them a big fat tip and lunch, they left. Sara and I sat on the floor in the living room, and slowly, we went through my things.
Sara opened the box of living room accents, a few sculptures and picture frames. Whenever we stopped talking and her mind began to wander, she always had a sad look on her face. The past lingered behind her eyes, haunting her.
âThanks for helping me unpack.â
She snapped back to reality. âOf course. Like Iâd ever let my best friend handle this on her own.â
âI wish you would show that same compassion for my thingsâ¦â
She rolled her eyes. âIf the box said china, I wouldnât have dropped it.â
âActually, china is stronger than regular plates. You could throw them at the wall and they still wouldnât break.â
âHow do you know stuff like that? Random crap?â
I shrugged. âI donât know. I guess Iâm a sponge.â
âA sponge?â
âYou know, I absorb everything.â
She made a face when she didnât understand the reference, and then she returned to sorting through my things. âWhen do you start your new job?â
âMonday.â I was nervous as hell, but so damn excited at the same time.
âTeaching little pretentious brats at a private schoolâ¦â She turned up her nose in disgust. âCount me out.â
âThey arenât pretentious brats. Theyâre kids.â
âWhatever,â she said. âTheyâll still wipe boogers on you.â
âIâm teaching high school, not preschool.â Sara wasnât exactly the most maternal type and never had been. But when she had her own kids, the instinct would kick in. It happened to all women.
âI wonder if there will be any hot teachers thereâ¦â She wiggled her eyebrows at me in a playful way, but it looked a little ridiculous since her eyebrows were so blonde they were white.
