Friday arrived, and I was pacing the floor. Lia was due almost an hour ago, and my mind was in overdrive. She’d said she wasn’t keen on motorway driving, and I was already thinking the worst. What if she’d given up and gone home? What if she’d been in an accident? What if, what if….

I couldn’t hide my relief when she finally called and admitted she was lost. Cursing myself for not making it clearer in my instructions, I dashed out to find her and guide her back to mine. The next shock came at the sight of how full her car was.

“Bloody hell, Lia. Are you moving in and not telling me?” I joked. She mumbled something about Annie, and it all made sense, but I jumped at how harsh her tone was. Putting it down to the stress of travel, I led her up the path to the front door. She apologised, and I seized the chance to touch her soft face, brushing her hair from her eyes.

I let her take in the house, saw her appraising it in her mind. Once she was ready, she got the full guided tour, including some embarrassing tales about DIY disasters. Her nerves calmed, and I wondered if I’d come across as nervous the weekend before. Remembering her fondness for tea from a pot, I had one waiting in the lounge when she returned from her freshen up. Each mouthful calmed her, and before long, she looked as comfortable curled up on my sofa as she had when she was in her own home.

Knowing how tired she was after her drive, I cancelled the table I’d booked for us at the local Italian and ordered pizza instead. We binge watched movies until we fell asleep and stayed there curled on the sofa until the security light outside woke us with a start.

“What’s that?” Lia’s sleepy voice was hoarse, and she cleared her throat.

“The security light. I’ll just go and double check. Sure it’s nothing though.” I stood and walked to the window. There was nothing I could see, but the sound of squealing tyres and a general uneasiness in my stomach left me uncomfortable. “Just a fox, probably after the pizza scraps. Let’s get to bed though. The light won’t bother us up there.”

Lia didn’t argue, and she followed me up the stairs. After a bathroom visit for us both, we climbed into my king-size bed and curled up, exhausted and ready for the sweet release of sleep. Sleep that came easy to Lia, but not to me. As I lay there, listening to her steady breathing, my mind began to throw unwanted thoughts my way. What if Helen was really crazy enough to stalk me? What if it had been her outside? I eased out from under Lia, went to double check the locks, and dropped Rich a message to let him know what had gone on. First thing Monday, I was fitting a security camera, if only for my own peace of mind.
