Chapter Eleven

Another week passed by. Rose was still choking me with wedding plans.

Invites had been sent out, and I hadn't even bothered to ask the date. I was so fed up, I'd had enough already. Jessie had been conveniently busy at work, apparently extra hours had been added to his rota. I was suspicious of Rex and Senka. I wasn't sure whether I was imagining the whole thing, or whether they were trying to keep Jessie and me apart. After much thought, I came to the conclusion it was because some of the guys on the third floor had gone away on vacation as a group which meant others were doing overtime, like Jessie.

The third floor was practically empty.

I wandered up there after lunch. Half hoping to accidentally bump into Senka. A couple of guys were at one of the pool tables, apart from that the place was quiet, too quiet, there wasn't even any music on. I switched the stereo on, looking through the stacks of CDs piled up on top. Then someone tickled my sides and I squirmed away, thinking it was probably Rex. Instead, Jessie leaned over me and lifted one of the CDs off the top pile.

“Aren't you supposed to be at work?” I asked.

“I got my days mixed up. Anyhow, I'd rather be here with you than down there.” I carried on neatly organizing the CDs and Jessie flicked through the playlist.

“Why do I get the feeling you've been avoiding me?” he asked.

“I haven't been avoiding you, you haven't been here.” I laughed.

“I guess not,” he said. “Do you want to play pool?”

“Sure, just give me a minute, these are all in the wrong cases and it's bugging me.” I said, sorting through the CDs.

“Okay,” he laughed. “I'm gonna grab a drink, you want anything?”

“I wouldn't mind a soda if you can find one up here.”

“No problem, I've got some stashed in my room for you, back in five. Don't go anywhere.” he said, sliding his arms around my waist and giving me a backward bear hug, then he kissed the side of my face.

I carried on sorting through the disks, carefully stacking them like before. But me being me and how clumsy I am, I managed to knock a whole pile of disks off.

“Crap!” I grumbled, squatting down to collect the disks.

I quickly picked them back up and had managed to locate all of them except one, which had rolled away from me. I stood up and put the other disks down safely, then turned around to search for the lost disk and found Senka standing in front of me, holding the disk out for me to take. I gingerly reached out to take the disk. He didn't let go and there was a few awkward seconds of eye contact before he finally released it to me.

“Thanks.” I said, but he'd already turned away from me and was walking across the room to the other two guys.

Jessie walked over and held out a soda can for me, his eyes fixed on Senka.
