Chapter Thirty

A stiff breeze out of the east pushed the choppy seas along behind the Hopper Too. With each swell the little craft outran, her hull slammed down and into the trough of the next. And with each slam, a little more hope faded from the wounded man’s eyes. His body lay limp on a tarp and a pile of towels in the salon, pillows tucked around him to ease the rough ride.

Sitting beside him as his life seeped into his abdomen, Kate knew the hard crossing was futile. The man groaned. His fingers twitched, and Kate took his hand. She met his unfocused gaze.

“We’ll be in Miami soon. Is there anyone I can call for you?”

The man’s head barely shook. A hoarse whisper came on his labored breath. “No.” He fought to focus his eyes on Kate’s. “The lady say easy money. Grab you and go. Not … this. I’m sorry.”

Kate’s grip tightened around the man’s hand. “You’re gonna be okay. And when you’re better, you can start over.”

“No. This is the end for me. Let the sea have us, and stop that bitch who’s after you. That will make it right for me.” He closed his eyes, and his hand went limp.

“Stay with me!” Kate pleaded with the man, lightly tapping his face. But she knew it was too late.

She held his hand for another minute, her first two fingers on the inside of his wrist. Finally, she lay his arm on the couch and pushed herself to her feet. She climbed up to the flybridge, sat on the wide bench behind the wheel, and leaned against William’s shoulder.

Without a word, he slowly backed the throttle down. The boat slowed, then settled into the rough chop of the Gulf Stream.

Brian squirmed in the silence. “What do we do now?”

“We have a couple of options,” William began.

Kate stopped him. “The right thing to do is call the authorities. But …”

William killed the engines, and let the sound of the lapping sea against the hull fill the moment. “But? I feel like I’m not going to like what’s coming next.”

“For the record, I don’t like it either. But let’s play it out. We call. Then we sit here for what, two hours? Three? The Americans come out. The Bahamians come out. Everyone comes out, and it’s a three-ring circus trying to figure out who these guys were and what happened. They separate us and question the living daylights out of all of us. Separately. Of course our stories will line up because we were in the right, but still. There’s an assault rifle, a bloody knife, and two dead men on our boat. There’s no way this ends today. Or tomorrow. Or the day after that.” She paused, sucked in a deep breath, and stared at the horizon. Then she continued.

“They said a woman hired them to kidnap the two of us.” She nodded toward Brian. “Who even knew we were together? Let alone where to find us. We met less than a week ago.
