Chapter Twenty-One
Mikey sat on a chair next to the couch where Trick sat next to Mason. Hamlish took notes in a chair across from Mikey. They were nearing the end of their second family session and, after listening to Mason and his revelations, Mikey swiped a tear from her eye. âI canât believe you blame yourself for what happened to me,â said Mikey. âItâs my own damn fault that I got caught up with Victor. Not yours.â
âI should have seen the signs,â said Mason, his face pale. âI knew Margaret was involved with him, but I didnât do anything about it, and then you visited, and you were trying to mend fences with Margaret. I should have warned you.â
âYou did warn me, and I ignored you. I did everything to prove I could take care of myself, and I didnât need you,â said Mikey. âI was the idiot.â She shook her head. âWhen are you going to get it through your thick skull that Iâm responsible for my mistakes. I made the choices I made. You didnât hurt me; Victor did. You saved me.â
Mason dropped his head. âI donât see it that way.â
âTake some credit, Mikey,â said Trick. âYou saved yourself, with Masonâs help.â Trick glanced at Mason. âBut sheâs right. You canât take on the worldâs problems, Red. Those burdens get too heavy to carry, and then you need a pill to cope.â
âI let you down, too,â said Mason.
âWeâve already talked about that,â said Trick. âI donât carry a single grudge or regret, and neither should you. God knows Iâve made my share of mistakes and let you down.â He shifted to face Mason. âThe point is, everybody wishes they could do things differently. Youâre not alone in that. You just need to ease off the gas in the guilt department. You didnât kill your mom and youâre not responsible for Victorâs evil. And if you donât find a way to deal with that, youâll always be looking for an escape.â He paused. âAnd if Miss Vain were here, you know sheâd tell you the same thing. Sheâs seen the real Red and she still sticks with you. That should tell you something.â
Doubtful, Mason rubbed his neck. âI think itâs going to take some time.â
âWhich is why weâre here,â said Hamlish. âTo finally take the time.â He set his notepad on a side table. âWe have a couple more minutes. Is there anything else youâd like to say to Mason?â
Mikey dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. âJust that Iâm so glad weâre talking about this. Youâve always avoided the subject.â
Mason cleared his throat. âI was ashamed.â
Mikey scoffed. âWell, stop it. If Iâd known what youâd been carrying, Iâd have sat you down a long time ago and set you straight. I donât blame you for anything and never did. And I certainly never blamed you for Victor or what happened to Mom. I love you, you big oaf. I need you to get that through your thick head.â
Mason smiled softly.
