Chapter 23
She barely remembered any of what happened after she heard the woods-folk words in her mind. It was a lot of fading in and out of consciousness until she woke in her room. Her mother was nowhere to be found. Sheâd left a note on her desk saying she hoped she felt better.
So her mother and father had a specific reason for coming to Criswall. They must have planned it for years⦠But were they really so foolish as to attempt to overthrow the Kingdom of Mar Thagroth? The Kingdom had tens of thousands of soldiers and hundreds of powerful wizards and witches. And her father was associated with the high priest, with a group of cultists, who performed vile rituals. For what end? Did they hope to win the blessings of this god? Worship BA-AL and no other, for he is the king and ruler of all gods.
They were conspirators and part of the cult of the Lord of the Fallen sweeping the city. Had she unwittingly joined them? Though she shared her parentsâ hatred of the northern nobility, she knew they werenât all bad. She thought of Prince Jondran, Lysha, Baird, and many others, and knew of their kindness. How could she be associated with something that might harm them? She was torn between friendship and devotion to her family.
Outside the window, she saw snowflakes falling to a white blanket of the purest snow. Overnight, the weather had turned frosty, and winter regained its hold over the city. Whatever happened to spring? She missed the warm sunshine and the new buds. The people scurrying below were bundled up and moved in a hurried gait, indicating the huge drop in temperature. In the sky, the snow swirled, whipped up by the wailing wind. This was no ordinary storm.
She needed to confide in someone and didnât want to be alone right now, lost in her confusing thoughts. Maybe she could find Lysha and tell her what she was allowed to say without breaking the blood oath? Perhaps, she was shopping in Danton Square. Today was a day of rest, after all. To prepare herself for the cold weather, she bundled up, though underneath she wore an exquisite red velvet dress suitable for shopping and a trip to the cathedral. At last, she slung on a thick blue cape the color of the sky and tugged on her tall black boots and laced them up. She grabbed her purse and raced out of the room.
When she stepped outside, the wind slapped her face, causing her to wrap her hood closer around her cheeks. It was so cold her nostrils stuck to themselves as she breathed in the frigid air. She leaned into the northern wind and pressed on, jogging through the deep snow toward the college gate. Once she reached the bridge, she noticed ice had formed along the riverâs edges, creating long, crystalline waves of shimmering art. Ravenswood stood massive and proud in the distance, a reminder of her investigation.
