Chapter 12
Reasonable Exchange
WHILE EVERYONE ELSE got up and went off to see the queen with a spring in their step, Alice remained stuck to the chair, pinned by the Cheshire Cat and unable to leave no matter how much she tried.
With his tail in her mouth and claws in her arm, Alice tried to kick the chair out from under her to get out of his clutches. Even with it gone, she dangled in the air, suspended by the Cheshire Cat. She couldnât move and couldnât find another place to step to, though she tried.
âAfter all that trouble, I donât think youâll be escaping this particular predicament,â the Cheshire Cat said, grinning up at her again.
Alice tried to make a sound, but Cat shushed her, smiling at her pityingly. âNow Alice, this is not the way a young girl should behave. Perhaps itâs best if you rethink your actions. You could be a princess. You will have power and you will have a mother who is available. One who likely wonât keep a key to your room in her pocket all day. The Queen will love you much more than that other mother of yours. Why, look at what yours did to her daughters.â
Alice stopped struggling at that, wondering what the Cat knew that she didnât. Did he know something about Lori? No, that was just him pretending that he knew more than he did. Maybe he learned something, but chances were that he knew nothing more than she did. Lori was off somewhere, and their mother wouldnât have gotten rid of her, just like sheâd never get rid of Alice.
âOne sent away. Another one sent to her room so often it might as well be a prison. She locks you away in there when you are bad, or locks you away in the house when you are good. You already have the same amount of freedom as a princess. The difference is that your new house will be far bigger and give you more space to roam. You will be able to explore freely without breaking into rooms you should not be in. You will have people around all day who will speak to you and who will play with you and who will not try to forget you. People who will believe everything you have to say about Wonderland. Now, be a good girl and stay.â
He removed his tail, but not his claws. Alice tried to spit out the fur that remained in her mouth, but the furry feeling of the tail in there would not leave. She would have to deal with that for a while, she figured. At least there was no more tail in her mouth.
She looked flatly back down at the Catâs expectant eyes. âYou want to go back over,â she said. âYou want me to let you go back over to my world so you can escape the Queen, donât you? You did all this just so you could make me let you go back.
