AS I HEAD home, my taxi trails an open truck carrying idols of Durga and her children. The goddess' gaze is fixed on my taxi. About half-a-dozen young men escorting the gods to their pandal are perched on the side rails of the truck. They are all smoking and drinking cheap rum from plastic glasses. Since the traffic is moving slowly—this is the busy Chittaranjan Avenue—I watch them finish an entire bottle of rum, in full public glare. They know that the gods are idols of clay until the priest consecrates them on sashti, the sixth day from Mahalaya, when Durga Puja formally begins.
