scramble free, Decker fell on him, repeatedly sinking his knife into the struggling man's body.

"Breed!" he cried with each slash. "Dirty breed!"

Drawing back only when he heard the pound of approaching hoofs, Decker sheathed his knife and dove into the water; keeping low, at times ducking completely under the shallow water, he made it across the stream. Gaining the cotton woods on the other side, he ran downstream to his horse.

As soon as he untied the hobbles, the horse sprang upright, shaking its head angrily, blowing all the while. Decker snatched the reins, pulled the horse around and hauled his drenched body into the saddle, his thigh wound throbbing now. Breaking from the cottonwoods on the other side of the stream, he headed north again over the prairie. Dusk was falling rapidly. He hadn't gone long before he heard a horse splashing across the stream behind him; that would be the other one—Long.

He bent forward over the black, his heels digging hard into its steaming flanks. Behind him, Long broke out of the cottonwoods and sent a shot after him. But at that distance and with night falling, Decker paid little attention, and without bothering to look back, he swept on across the grassland. He could hear Long gaining on him, but he had confidence in his black's superior stamina and just kept going. Long did not fire again, and when Decker was a few miles farther on, he glanced back and saw that Long was falling steadily behind.

Darkness fell with a suddenness that was startling, and he lifted his horse to one last great spurt, keeping on until he felt the horse finally begin to give out. Urging it
