The very next day, Mrs. Grimshaw failed to appear at Allison Danner’s house. When Allison came home from the hospital to give Longarm some lunch, he asked about the older woman’s absence.

“Oh,” Allison said, “she went to visit a friend today.”

He felt relieved. “She did? That’s fine.”

“Yes, I was surprised when she asked for the day off. I didn’t even know Mabel had a friend to visit.”

Suddenly, Longarm remembered his conversation with Mabel and how she’d declared that she didn’t have a “friend in the world.”

“Custis, what’s wrong? Your expression just changed.”

“Mabel doesn’t have a friend to visit.”

“But—”

Longarm was already getting out of bed. “Do you know where we can find her?”

“You can’t get out of that bed and go running around. Custis, what’s wrong with you!”

“Missus Grimshaw is going to kill Mr. Grimshaw today,” Longarm said without the slightest doubt. “And we’ve got to stop her.”

“I don’t understand!”

“I’ll explain later. Help me get dressed. We’ve got to find her before she commits murder.”

Five minutes later, Longarm and Allison Danner were rushing up the street with Longarm shouting, “Where is Mr. Grimshaw’s livery?”

“It’s over on 5th Street.”

“How far?”

“Two long blocks. Custis, you shouldn’t be doing anything so strenuous! Why are we going to Mr. Grimshaw’s Livery?”

“I think you can guess the answer.”

“Oh my heavens!” Allison cried. “Do you really think that that Mrs. Grimshaw would actually kill him?”

“I’m sure of it,” Longarm said, hurrying along the street.

When they reached the Grimshaw Stable, there wasn’t a person in sight. Just lots of for-sale horses milling in a big round pen. But then, just as they were trying to decide what to do, Longarm heard a horrific scream come from inside the barn. An instant later, a pale woman of about forty ran out of the barn with her eyes filled with terror.

“Hold it!” Longarm shouted. “What’s going on in there?”

“Mabel has Otto tied down and she’s cutting the life out of him with a knife!”

Allison paled and Longarm drew his six-gun with his left hand and raced into the barn. He could hear a desperate struggle and loud, tortured breathing coming from somewhere in the rear of the dimly lit barn.

“Mabel!” Allison cried. “Mabel!”

“Help! Help!” a weak voice pleaded. “She’s killin’ me! I’m bleeding to death!”

Longarm moved back toward the rear of the barn. Horses, spooked by the smell of fresh blood, were stamping and snorting in their individual stalls. One big gray horse was tearing his stall apart because he was so frightened. “Mabel,” Longarm said. “Come out with your hands up.”

“You’re going to have to shoot me!” the woman hollered. “ ’Cause I just done in this miserable, lecherous old man.”

Longarm rushed forward, and as his eyes adjusted, the outline of the pair emerged. It wasn’t a pretty sight. Mabel had somehow stunned her former husband and then tied him spread-eagled in an empty stall. She had then pulled down the old man’s pants and crudely gelded him.

“Stand back, Marshal,” Mabel warned placing the knife to Otto’s throat. “I
