Chapter 10

Longarm counted twenty-three Cheyenne men who showed up to be deputized, and most of them were armed with shotguns. He deputized the entire bunch without hesitation, and then divided them into two groups.

“Remember,” he said, looking directly at Orvis White, “this man is desperate and will kill without a moment’s hesitation. Also, look for the wound on the side of his head where his ear was shot off. He’ll be weak from loss of blood and probably not able to move very fast. But don’t underestimate him for even an instant. Shoot to kill unless he’s unconscious. Then fire a gun into the sky and we’ll all come running.”

Longarm looked around, then repeated his description of J.D. Kilgore. “Are there any last questions?”

No one had any questions.

“All right then,” Longarm said. “I’ll take this side of the railroad tracks. White, you and your men will take the other side. We should be done in less than two hours. If he’s still in Cheyenne, we have to find him dead or alive.”

Orvis White nodded, his face set with determination. Longarm headed up the street pointing his men to various buildings.

The manhunt had begun, and Longarm just hoped they found Kilgore before the killer somehow carried out his threat of revenge.
