Chapter 14

Longarm escorted Miss Hilda Olsen into the Federal Building and then up the stairs to Billy Vail’s private office.

Billy came to his feet, his expression grim. “I heard about the jailbreak and killings that took place last night, but no details.”

“Sheriff Hall is dead as is Hilda’s father.”

Billy studied Hilda. “I’m sorry about the death of your father.”

“So am I,” she said, looking pale. “But even though he was my father, I know that he was not a good man, nor is my twin sister. What I would like is for Pearl to be found and arrested. It’s my hope that she will not be shot down but will instead serve time in prison and someday be redeemed.”

“Of course,” Billy said. “This must be very hard on you.”

“I’ve seen it coming for years,” Hilda said in a small voice. “And I had no love for my stepbrothers. They were deadly young men and I knew that one day they would either be shot or hanged. I am concerned about my aunt Edna, and I understand that one of the deputies in this office knocked her out cold and that she fell from our wagon into the snow.”

“Yes,” Billy said, tapping some papers on his desk. “I have it all down here in a written report. During the excitement, the woman recovered and slipped away. Do you think that she returned to your father’s homestead?”

“I don’t know,” Hilda replied. “But it is likely. She had no other place to go.”

“Then maybe that is where your sister is to be found.”

Hilda shrugged. “Possibly, but Pearl has other choices.”

“Mind expanding on that?” Longarm asked.

“Pearl is very smart and resourceful. She won’t be easy to capture and she might decide she would rather die in a gunfight than be sentenced to prison for many years or even hanged.”

Billy nodded. “We don’t know if she committed a murder in that jail . . . but we suspect that she might have. Any thoughts on that, Miss Olsen?”

“None that I care to share with you,” Hilda said quietly.

“Custis,” Billy said, “everyone in the office wants to know what happened in the sheriff’s office. Do you mind addressing them?”

“No,” Longarm answered, “I don’t. Will you assign men to help find and arrest Pearl?”

“I will,” Billy promised.

Longarm took Hilda’s arm and led her out of the office. Every deputy and clerk in the big office was standing in anxious anticipation of hearing what he had to tell them.

“Fellow deputies,” Longarm began, eyes covering the room, “this is Miss Hilda Olsen and I’m sure that all of you have heard what happened at the sheriff’s office. Deputies Jasper White and Clyde Peterson along with myself were able to apprehend Dane Olsen and Pearl Olsen. Two Olsen men died in a shootout just outside in the street and Sheriff Patterson was wounded severely.”

Longarm continued, “Miss Hilda Olsen was responsible for saving Sheriff Patterson’s life and was therefore not jailed along with her father and sister. What you may not
