CHAPTER 11

The journey from his grandparents’ house to my room seemed to be a long one. His revelations made my knees go weak. I wondered what would be the price of telling him the truth, without mincing words. Would he accept it or would it break our friendship?

I was in my room, thinking about what happened at his grandparents’ place.

As we had descended the steps towards the living room, my mind had been racing hard, looking for a way to let him know my thoughts. Just then, God had helped me through his grandma. She had asked me, "So Tia, when are you getting married?”

"I don’t wish to marry right now,” I had answered. “I have to make a name and make my father proud. I had fallen in love once, and that screwed up my life. Right now, I don’t need any such thing that will pull me back," I had added and glanced at his grandma, although I had been aware that Arjun was intently listening to every word.

"To tell you the truth, love irritates me now. It took me several years to overcome the failure of my parents’ marriage. In spite of that, I dared to fall in love with Raghu. He had assured me, it would be a sunny day always with him, but it didn’t stand even for a year," I had given a short dry laughter as emotions had started overpowering me. "Now I don’t have any energy to fall for someone."

I had looked at Arjun for a second, and added, "Now, I only need friends."

Arjun hadn’t uttered a word, but his grandma had said, "Time will heal everything."

Soon we had wished them bye, and returned to our resort. Arjun had kept quiet on the way back. However, I could feel he wasn’t angry this time. It was as if he understood what I wanted.

I jolted out of my reverie when Shruti called up and said, "Tonight is the Spinster party! You can wear whatever you want!"

"Yes, I do remember. Don’t worry I will be ready by 7 p.m. I have some work and will catch up later. Bye," I said and disconnected the call.

Just then the doorbell rang.

"Can I?" asked Arjun as I opened the door, waiting for my permission to come inside.

I let him in, and he sat down on the chair kept beside the bed. “I wanted to ask you something," he stated his voice unsure.

My heart started to beat fast, as I noticed his serious expression. Hadn’t he understood what I had said at his grandparent’s house?

I clenched my bed board, trying to think what it was about. However, the tension that had been mounting on my face, evaporated as soon as he said, "Can we start over? You know… erasing the misunderstandings, the confusion, the fight and the confession? I don’t want anyone to be uncomfortable because of me, especially you!" he added and looked at me. "You were always my special friend, and I would want us to remain just like that.
