Stepping into the witches’ sector always struck me as traversing into another realm. Roth’s houseplant wonderland came close, but where the greenery soothed and nurtured my boss’ Leshy magic, the witches’ rooms were magic.

Arcane symbols greeted the eye, the offices branching off the main room more like alcoves than anything else. Candles burned in certain parts, while incense and oils coiled from others, all brought together by running lines of crystal grids, plants, altars, and everything else the variety of witches ICRA had in their employ followed.

If there was one thing I adored about this space, it was its inclusivity.

ICRA didn’t give a fuck if our witches came from the old lines, where the power residing within the body required no exterior channel or support. Instead, the Agency valued every person with an innate tie to magic. No skill was less worthy than the other. And, damn, that was a whole amazing vibe.

The single downside of being a wolf in the witches’ abode was the damn constant tingling in my nose thanks to the different arcane powers mixing in the air. Finn, on the other hand, with his part Koldun nature, gained an instant spring to his step. I slid a sideways glance at him and chuckled under my breath. It was always nice seeing him in his element.

Saying hello to a couple of witches along the way, we went all the way to the back, where, what I liked to call, a mini-morgue rested. The cut-off from the magic-infused air in the common space sliced through me like a knife when we walked through the door, but there was a reason this room was warded to remain neutral.

I flicked my gaze to the two rows of victims. “Lina says you found something?”

“I did.” Mara walked over to the workstation on the side, motioning us to follow, then braced her butt against the desk. “Sutter was right. The magic on the bodies, now that we managed to take a deeper look, definitely belongs to Shelby.”

I sank into the empty office chair behind me while Finn leaned on the backrest with a heavy enough hand the whole seat tipped. It wasn’t that I hadn’t believed Aric—or my own gut, for that matter—but something about hearing it officially confirmed wormed through me like razor-sharp ice.

Or maybe that was due to Mara’s scent, letting me know the shit was just about to get started.

The witch rubbed her temple. “Let me preface this that the magic in the bodies is not like the hex we lifted from Sutter. But it was that experience that opened up our understanding of what’s going on here.”

“Meaning?” Finn’s voice rumbled from behind me.

“Meaning that the magic-based traits we saw in Aric Sutter, the ones he gained when he turned—there are similarities to the bodies.”

“So, Aric was right?” I glanced at the corpses, remembering what Aric had said at the scene. “Shelby
