âWhat happened?â I asked, taking notice for the first time of the fact that we were now standing in an all-encompassing shadow, the sun having given up its final few remnants of light a few minutes before.
The scar had begun to sweat so profusely, that I thought for a moment that he simply was not going to fill in the rest of the story for me, it was causing him that much distress. Clearly, this whole saga had been pushed under the surface a long time ago now, and it seemed like I was going to be the first person to hear of what had happened, apart from Lawrence and Chester.
âI want you to know that I am only telling you this because I know that it will go no further. I also know that it has been distracting you.â
âOnly because you two have been distracted by it.â
âIt was towards the end of last year. Last few days of December. It was cold, really cold. Chester and I were given an observation post to take over, in a small sap that looked over part of the German line. We were to be in there for two days, with no relief, no contact with anyone else or anything like that. We were to be left alone.â
He looked into my eyes for the first time in hours and I could tell that he had been staring straight at the setting sun in its final few minutes of the day, they were reddened and threatening to stream its warm liquid down the side of his cheeks.
âWe were to observe the German line and note down their daily routines, in preparation for an attack. We were quite happy with the prospect. We like working on our own, just the two of us.â
âI have noticed.â
âOur first twenty-four hours passed with no real drama, we just sat there making notes on what we could see and made sure that our heads were kept low at all times.â
He paused for a moment, as if something had got itself caught at the back of his throat.
âAndrew, we were told that we were going to be left alone. We thought that was it for two days, you have to understand.â
An accusing finger had found itself towards me, accompanied by an equally accusing eyebrow that was lifted so high I thought it would disappear into his hairline.
âYes. I believe you.â
âNobody told us that someone was coming to collect our observations in the middle of the night. Not a soul told us. I swear.â
His blood was boiling so much that I was convinced, had he not been saying something for my ears only, he would have been screaming at the top of his lungs, it had enraged him that much.
Despite his apparent anger, he carried on.
âIt must have been about three in the morning. Pitch black it was, you know how it is. We couldnât see a thing. Well, I was asleep, Harold was on watch. You know how he is, heâs still young, so he was still a bit jumpy.
