The aroma of freshly ground and brewed coffee hits you like a crisp left hook as you step into 220 Grad, a little bubble of retro-cool style in a tucked-away corner of Salzburg’s Old Town. Splashes of tangerine orange vamp up the cafe and decked terrace, where there is a mellow buzz any time of day except at breakfast, when it’s as busy as a beehive.

220 Grad roasts its beans at a nearby roastery (yes, you can visit) and the name alludes to the ideal temperature for so doing. Skilled baristas whip up custom blends from South and Central America. The house blend, with notes of cocoa, hazelnut and caramel, is an excellent match for cakes like the avocado and chocolate torte. For the inside scoop, check out the regular three-hour coffee seminars.
