Get ready for loads of karaoke bars and big, booming nightclubs, clustered around the Waterfront Esplanade, KK Times Sq, where the newest hot spots are congregating, and Beach St, in the centre of town, a semipedestrianised street cluttered with bars and eateries.

El Centro Bar

(32 Jln Haji Saman; h5pm-midnight, closed Mon) El Centro is understandably popular with local expats and travellers alike; it’s friendly, the food is good and it makes for a nice spot to meet other travellers. Cool tunes, non smokey, and a laid-back vibe, El Centro also hosts impromptu quiz nights, costume parties and live-music shows.

Bed Club

(%088-251 901; Waterfront Esplanade; admission Fri & Sat incl drink RM20, beer from RM21; h8pm-2am, until 3am Fri & Sat) KK’s largest club thunders with pop, gyrating Filipino musicians and shrill teenagers, and boasts guest DJs nightly. It’s overcrowded and cheesy, but if you’re looking for a party, this is it. Bands play from 9pm.
