ACTIVITIES AROUND YAQETA
Diving
The narrow ocean channel between the islands of Nacula and Nanuya Lailai has a few dive sites featuring coral walls, tunnels and swim-throughs.
Kayaking
The windy passage between Yaqeta and Matacawalevu is fabulous for advanced kayakers, while the many sheltered bays in the area are ideal for novices.
Yachting
Blue Lagoon is often used as a safe harbour and overnighting stop by many of the yachts touring through the northern Yasawas.
Snorkelling in Blue Lagoon
SEAGRASS BEDS AND COLOURFUL FAUNA
Snorkelling in the sheltered waters of Blue Lagoon is particularly delightful given the unique topography of its seabed. A fantastic seagrass garden thrives here, extending for about 50m from the shoreline into the lagoon, where the water is as clear as crystal. This makes for an unparalleled snorkelling experience: duck diving down to the floor (ranging 2m to 4m in depth), you can spot diverse fish and invertebrate species native to seagrass forests. The most striking among these are sea cucumbers that come in myriad colours and textures. Look out in particular for the elephant trunkfish, a giant sea cucumber featuring black stripes on a bright-orange exterior, or the prickly redfish, dotted with star-shaped spikes.
Swimming further out from the seagrass bed, youâll reach a deeper (3m to 4m) part of the lagoon, where youâll see isolated coral bommies on a sandy floor. These bommies are home to innumerable sergeant major fish schools, and snorkelling guides often throw bits of bread or fruit into the water to stir up a tornado of fish darting in to feed on the scraps.
Blue Lagoon is located on the western side of Nanuya Lailai, looking out to Matacawalevu across the water. All resorts in the area arrange snorkelling trips to the lagoon, stopping en route at a nearby reef to spot tiny pipefish â a cousin of the seahorse â hidden in the crannies. A motorboat ride from Yaqeta to the lagoon takes 30 minutes.
