Healer of Mine

I awoke to a voice that echoed in my ears nearly every time I’d come into any kind of sickness in Avalon. Whether Remy was with me or not, his soothing care stayed in my brain during my out-of-commission moments.

“Rosie, if you could hear me, that would make things so much simpler.”

“Why isn’t it working?” The irate interrogator wasn’t Kerdik, but Lugh. “Ye said she would be awake if ye gave her the ashwagandha, plus some of Kerdik’s magic.”

“It was a long shot.”

Kerdik’s irate tone reached my ears. “My blood should heal her! Give her more of my magic.”

I could sense Remy’s frustration at the two non-doctors chiming in. “She’s got enough of Master Kerdik’s magic in her to heal on her own. I know patience has never been his strong suit, but honestly. What miracles does he expect I have up my sleeve?”

I felt my wrist being lifted so Remy could check my pulse. It was hard to access the higher motor functions that allowed me to speak, but finally, I managed to put them out of their misery. “Dude, I’ve got a monster headache. Anyone got any painkillers?”

When I opened my eyes, my vision swam at a sickening speed. I groaned and nearly barfed all over Remy’s headless shoulders, but managed to just barely hold in my chunks. Like a lady.

Remy was holding my head stationary, pinned down atop the mattress, but Kerdik and Lugh leapt to their feet, chiming in on either side of him. They called my name, frantic with relief as explanations and worry spilled out of them at unintelligible speeds.

It was rare that Remy made actual sounds (what with him being tongueless and all), but he let out a frustrated, unintelligible shout at the men to back up, refusing to be pushed aside when there was actual healer work to be done. Remy shoved Lugh toward the door, and were Kerdik not the all-powerful being that he was, Remy would’ve pushed him out, as well. He pointed to the door with a stern look that seemed to say more than the simple “get the crap out.” Remy had been without the ability to speak aloud for around seventy years now, so he was adept at communicating more with a single look than most could with several paragraphs of actual words. Remy’s look said, “This is your fault, and you can’t undo it. I’m the one Rosie trusts. I’m the one you trust to fix what you broke. So let me do my job. Then you can have your time to grovel.”

Or maybe Remy was saying, “Go make me a sandwich.” It was anyone’s guess. But I liked to think I knew him better than most, since I had the cheat code to my brave knight’s internal monologue.

Kerdik backed down with a sneer that immediately turned repentant as his chin lowered. “Don’t send me away. I can’t leave my wife when she’s bedridden. I’ll leave if she wishes, but not a moment before.” He held up his hands and parked his sweet behind in a chair in the corner of the room.
