West Lancashire Light Railway Orenstein and Koppel 0-4-0T No. 22 Montalban

This locomotive is one of a pair discovered in Spain in the 1970s by members of the West Lancashire Light Railway. ‘Monty’, as it is affectionately known, is more like a family pet. It belongs to two friends of mine, Margaret and Keith Nicholls, and I have had the pleasure of driving it on several occasions.

The West Lancs is a wonderful little line, and I have retained my membership since we moved to the south. I have also helped out occasionally when they were short-handed, and one occasion sticks in my mind. The boiler inspector’s visit tends to be the week before Easter, and one year several of us turned up bright and early to check over and light the fires in all the steam engines. Whilst we were waiting for the pressure to build up, the BBC turned up and started filming. Eager to please, Keith moved Monty to the water tower and began to fill the tanks, aided by yours truly on the valve handle. Keith was so distracted by the camera that he didn’t tell me to shut off the water flow until it was too late. The water gushed out of the tank filler and Keith was absolutely drenched. Still, it made good TV!
