TWENTY:

Everyone Needs a Mermaid

Lady Ambia briefed the group of Fae eagerly waiting for her. Desdemona and the four bishops gathered in the hallway outside the private meeting room. Her first order was to have Desdemona send for the Oracle Reva. Bishop Geddes protested and wanted his update immediately, pounding his fist into his palm, looking like a petulant child.

“I want answers now, Healer!” Bishop Geddes demanded. “I am a Bishop! You answer to me!”

“I am a Healer. I am Lady Ambia. I answer to Queen Aurora,” she stated calmly, but there was a cold fire in those bluebell-colored eyes, her horns glittering in the light.

One job of the Oracle was to keep the history of the Fae, and this was a new chapter. Therefore, Lady Ambia held steadfast to her plan and waited until everyone she requested was present to brief them on the queen’s condition, despite Bishop Geddes’s disparaging commentary.

Next, they were required to come to an understanding about how to handle the factions until the queen woke up. Lady Ambia had already given her prognosis. She excused herself from the conversation. “Politics are not for healers. My mission is to close wounds, not open them. I will leave strategy up to you.” She bowed and took her leave.

The bishops did not give the healer’s exit a proper goodbye, or perhaps they did not care to as they returned to debating their plan. They wanted Theadova to stay out of sight and keep quiet about what had happened. Desdemona did not agree, but the bishops reminded her that, in essence, she was “hired muscle in charge of the guards, not diplomacy.”

The bishops felt having Desdemona make a general statement about the queen’s health would be best to keep the rumors to a minimum. They would call for the heads of the Royal Houses for a briefing instead of an open meeting as Aurora had originally planned. The bishops proposed making the heads wardens to keep all the Fae at the palace for their own safety. Besides keeping the Fae at the palace, the rest went against Aurora’s plan. It was deceptive and manipulative. Desdemona was uncomfortable with the direction of this strategic meeting of the minds, but she was unsure of what to do, so she stayed quiet, observing and listening.

A few hours later, Desdemona walked down the long corridor to call the meeting for the bishops. Her obsidian boots made no sound on the quartz floor. The Spelaions had done a magnificent job finishing the meeting hall and the adjacent hallways. Their crystal work really is mind-blowing.

She stopped at the clover-shaped window. They had outlined it in black tourmaline as per Aurora’s instructions. The stark contrast of the rough black crystal against the smooth, pink-tinged quartz walls made her smile. It was a perfect representation of Aurora. “Lovely and girly on the outside, but strong with a streak of edge on the inside.”

Their queen would pull through. She just had to. They had come so far. Desdemona briefly gripped the windowsill, letting her head fall forward.
