TWENTY-ONE:

“You’ve Got Some Explaining To Do”

Each bishop avoided eye contact with their queen. Geddes stroked his goatee as the rest dropped their heads in some form of contrition.

Theadova looked at them and back to his queen.

“What is it you have to tell me?” Aurora asked again. Her voice held a tinge of annoyance at having to question them a second time.

Bishop Ingor glanced at his comrades and stepped forward. “Your Grace, we are so relieved to see you well. How are you feeling?” He motioned for the other bishops to bring a chair for Aurora, but she waved her hands in refusal.

“I have spent hours, if not days, lying down. The last thing I want to do is sit.” She glanced around the room. Her eyes widened and her mouth curled into a smile as she spotted Theadova.

Aurora hurried to the white stag, threw her arms around his large neck, and buried her cheek in his snow-colored fur. The soft bristles tickled her neck as she hugged him and breathed in his scent. He smells like sunshine and fir trees, the soul of the forest.

“Are you well? Lady Ambia said that you brought me to safety. Because of you, I was able to rest and recuperate in the palace. Thank you, my friend.” Her voice was barely audible with her face pressed against his neck.

Theadova turned his neck to cradle her back, closing his eyes in appreciation of her kind words and sentiment. “No, Your Grace, it was you who saved me. Your energy wings and wind pulse kept the humans at bay. I just carried us home.”

Aurora put her forehead to his. She stroked his back. “We both did it, fair?”

Always the diplomat. Theadova simply nodded in agreement slowly as not to break their intimate moment.

The queen gave him a coy smile and continued to stroke the back of his neck while she spoke to the rest of the room. “I need to be filled in. What has happened since my return? Did you inform the lords and ladies of what transpired between me and the humans? Were all the Fae made aware of the situation as well?”

The room’s energy shifted from joyful to uncomfortable. Bishop Geddes stroked his cheek, avoiding eye contact. The bishops had some explaining to do to their queen.

When the bishops did not respond, Desdemona spoke up to goad them into a confession. “If I hurry, maybe I can catch Lady Serena before she hits the ocean. I think we will need her.” She pivoted, her black boots skidding on the floor.

“Why do I need Lady Serena?” Aurora’s eyes narrowed on the room. “Desdemona, answer me. Why do I need Lady Serena?”

Desdemona was not responsible for delivering the information. She lifted her chin and her cold stare zeroed in on the bishops.

Aurora followed her captain’s gaze, gave a subtle nod, and sucked in her cheeks. “My bishops, they should be able to explain this to me. Perhaps now would be a good time for them to start.
