CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“I’m fucking fine. Stop asking and stop staring at me.” Rush got a beer from his fridge, then slammed the door shut. It was just after five p.m., and he needed a distraction.

Across the room, Archer studied him. “You shouldn’t drink after almost drowning.”

Rush arched a brow and made a deliberate show of twisting off the top.

“Whatever,” Archer shook his head. “I know you’re fine. I want you to continue to investigate these moving cameras. I want to know who is doing it. If it’s Fisher, I’m gonna need that man’s head on a platter.”

“That I would be happy to do,” Rush said and then took a gulp of the IPA, aptly named Island Pirate Ale.

Archer nodded. “Me too. I want you to run a full diagnostic on the island’s security. Make sure there’s nothing else, no other breaches.”

Rush knew every Lock and Key location was checked on a regular basis, making sure the security was up to par and that the system hadn’t been breached in any way. The process was ongoing and completely random. Twenty-four-seven, three sixty-five. If he wasn’t mistaken, they’d run a check on the island not too long ago, maybe six months. Theoretically, it all should be secure but there was that hole on the path that Kat had stumbled onto and the reports of other off-kilter cameras.

Another thought hit him. “You aren’t doing this just to keep me occupied, are you? I told you, I’m fine, goddammit. I barely knew Kat and you wanted her gone anyway.”

Archer stood up with a scowl. “I don’t assign busy work. You should know that by now. Don’t insult me by suggesting it. I need this done. Are you up to it?”

Rush nodded once.

“Good. See to it. And be very thorough. Every single thing no matter how trivial.”

“Understood.”

Archer gave him a terse nod and walked out the cabin door, closing it behind him.

Rush lifted the bottle to his lips but paused as another thought occurred. Archer was worried. That was the only explanation. But about what? Not that he’d say anything unless he was absolutely sure there was an issue. Then, and only then, would he share his worry and ask for solutions.

Rush heaved out a long sigh. Archer’s orders meant staying on the island for at least another week. There were a lot of details on this one. Lots of cameras and area to cover. He’d already made a lot of headway on the cameras, but a system wide diagnostic would take a lot longer.

Archer asking for a complete check struck him as unusual. Kat disappearing was another oddity. Rush hated this kind of abnormality. He’d learned in his military days that when something odd happened, he just had to brace for the other fucking shoe to drop.

He took a big swallow of his beer and sat down on his couch. Normally he would sit on the veranda and watch the ocean, letting the age-old rhythm soothe him. But he knew if he went out there tonight, he’d just scan the waves for Kat.
