For a balanced immune system and to help fight colds and flu, try making an elderberry tincture with the added antiviral properties of lemon balm and thyme.
Today, there are not that many of us living as closely with the land as our ancestors did and for people new to herbalism, our knowledge may be especially limited. So before planning which herbs you will use in making your herbal tinctures, let’s consider a few things:
Your Herbal Needs
The types of herbs you will need will depend on what your herbal medicinal needs are. Do you want something for overall general health? How about something to induce a restful sleep or to relieve stress? Maybe you just need a little something to ease your digestion. This is the time to do a little research and make a list of the herbs best suited for your needs. Keep it simple by choosing plants that are easily identifiable—maybe they are already growing in your garden. Herbs like garlic, peppermint, and lavender are powerful plant allies that most people know and are easily attainable.
Local Sources
If you plan to purchase herbs for tinctures, before hitting the internet for your herbal needs, visit a trusted local herbalist. This way you know you are getting the freshest herbs that have been harvested ethically, and you’re helping support a small local business.
Finding a Mentor
If you are interested in wildcrafting, seek out a knowledgeable herbal guide in your area to show you what to look for when foraging and proper foraging etiquette. Many areas offer classes.
Identification of Poisonous Plants
Know which plants are poisonous and how to treat affected areas if you come in contact with one.
Which Parts of the Plants to Use
I can’t stress hard enough how important it is to know your plants. Different plant parts can have different constituents. You might be able to use the berries on one tree but the bark may be toxic. If you are not sure of a plant, don’t take from it. Instead, take a photo of it and take it to a well-trusted herbalist or Master Gardener to help you identify it.
Responsible Harvesting
This goes back to finding a mentor. Before trudging into the forest with a shovel and a bag, ready to snatch up everything around you, find a guide who can teach you proper forging techniques. Remember these plants are our allies and we need to treat them with respect. A rule of thumb is to take only what you need and never more than one-third of the plant.
Using Your Weeds
Many common backyard weeds have medicinal uses. Try prolific plants such as dandelion or self-heal. Just remember to never take plant material from an area that may have been sprayed with pesticides or chemicals (such as roadways).
Growing Your Own
The benefit of growing your own herbs is that you know exactly what the plant is and what went into growing it. Having a small garden of herbal allies allows you to connect with the plants. By watching their seasonal changes and working with them hands on, this gives you an intimate connection to the spirit of the plant.
