Chapter 6

---

“Oh, Mister Skye! We were getting worried! Welcome ho… Oh? And who do we have here?”

The owner of the inn leaned to the side to observe the Foxkin standing behind me. Even taller than I was, her homely look seemed in jarring contrast to what I’d witnessed from the woman on occasion while eating in her little café. More than once, I’d seen her single-handedly whip the butts of adventurers or travelers who’d gotten a bit too rambunctious for their own good after sampling far too much of her home-brewed alcohol. I couldn’t forget the time a traveling merchant “accidentally” touched her rear-end. Her face flushing in color that matched the fiery red hair she kept tied neatly into a ponytail. Then, she’d knocked the man unconscious with a single chop to the skull, hoisted him over her shoulder like he was nothing but a sack of potatoes, carried him up the stairs, and, quite literally, tossed him into his room.

People heard the crash four blocks down the street.

I could only imagine what her reaction would have been if I hadn’t gotten Lilith cleaned up in the nearby bathhouse before returning to the inn. Sheena and some of the other female adventurers took Lilith, albeit after a bit of a struggle since the Foxkin didn’t want to leave my side, to the women’s side of the facility while I managed to get cleaned up in the men’s bath. By the time we exited the baths, Kroyov had secured us some fresh clothes. I was grateful, considering the last thing I wanted was for the innkeeper, Wynn, to pulverize me for letting Lilith wear her previous rags. So, I made a mental note to repay Kroyov, Sheena and the others later on.

Now, back at the inn, I found myself wearing a rather stylish white tailcoat over a fresh set of matching trousers and a navy-blue shirt. Lilith, on the other hand, had been dressed in a rather simple but surprisingly elegant white gown with green highlights. The quality of our new garb left a sinking suspicion that Myles had been the one to provide them.

“It’s a long story,” I said, gently pushing the cautious Foxkin in front of me. “Wynn, this is Lilith. Lili, why don’t you say hi to Wynn. She’s the owner of the Red Hare Inn, so we’ll be in her care for a while.”

“Um… Hello,” Lilith replied, bowing slightly.

Wynn’s eyes seemed to narrow in curiosity as if picking up on the awkward air between the three of us.

“Hmm,” she began. “It seems like you’ve both been through a bit of an ordeal, haven’t you? Well, Elfriede has already gone to bed for the night, but give me a minute and I’ll whip you both up some supper. Then, we can talk.”

“Ah, I appreciate it, Wynn, but it’s been a long day. If it’s all the same, I think I’ll—”

Feeling a tug on my shirt, I looked down and found myself confronted by Lilith’s amber eyes sparkling. No, begging.
