What that means to you is that you can enjoy adding designer items to your wardrobe at a fraction of what it would cost you otherwise. The majority of designers offer limited edition collections. If you fall in love with a designer item, you may not want to wait until it goes on sale. It might not last on the shelves long enough to be discounted.
Can You Actually Wear It?
When shopping, make sure you have plenty of time to try things on. Take your time in the dressing room. Sit down, bend down and pretend to drive or type in the clothes to make sure they fit properly.
One of the elements of elegance is wearing your clothes effortlessly. If your clothes don’t fit correctly (too small or too big), are uncomfortable or are in constant need of adjusting, then it takes effort. You should be able to put your outfit on for the day and not think about it again until you take it off that night. Clothes that make you look and feel great will be worn on a regular basis and not relegated to the back of the closet where they transition from being clothes to clutter.
Beg, Borrow and Swap
Once your basic wardrobe is set, a next step would be to purchase accessories for special occasions such as a clutch purse, a shawl or a bold necklace. In the meantime, consider borrowing from a friend. Even after you have created one or two complete special occasion outfits, it can still be fun to shop your friend’s closet. Just remember to give the items back immediately after the event in the same condition they were lent to you. Also, be willing to loan your own items when your friend is in need.
Buying Shoes
Like your clothes, you should strive to wear 80% of your shoe wardrobe 80% of the time. Get your money’s worth out of them.
Take your time when trying on shoes. Walk the full length of the store in them. If they are too big, too small or pinch at all, leave them at the store. Have you ever seen a woman wear shoes that hurt? She walks in a manner that is the furthest thing from elegant. Whether purchasing heels, boots, open-toed shoes or flats, make sure they are comfortable.
One of the things I like about Zappos.com is the reviews. I chose my classic pumps based on the comments people left about how comfortable they were to walk in. With Zappos’ free returns policy, you can take your time trying them out to make sure they will work for you.
Note: Make your shoes last twice as long by not wearing them two days in a row. Having a day off will give them time to rest and air out.
Yo-Yo Dieting and Your Closet
My mom is one of the most stylish, pulled together women I know. All my life, my friends have commented about her clothes and how great she looks. Unfortunately, one struggle my mom has always had is her weight.
