PROJECT 1:
Upholstering a Tabletop or Seat
Upholstering a piece of furniture is a great way to extend its life, which saves you money. In my home, I have found four instances where covering a tabletop or seat was a necessary solution:
Child safety: Our coffee table had, what I considered, sharp corners, and I was afraid my wobbly toddlers might fall into them. So I thought a cushioned fabric top would rectify the situation in a very tasteful manner. You can buy cushioned corner protectors at baby supply stores, but they’re unattractive and only useful for those few years that kids are getting their balance. The Reduction Rebel is in it for the long haul. When given the choice of temporary fix or aesthetic solution, we go for the latter. We strive for quality and obsolescence.
Hiding damage or a flaw: Did your son or daughter chip the heck out of your coffee table with the TV remote, Bamm-Bamm Rubble style? Are you thinking of passing over an estate sale chair that has paint drips on the seat? Is there a crack down the center? All of these imperfections can be solved with some fabric and quilt batting.
Updating décor: Mauve flowers are out. Blue seersucker doesn’t work in the art deco dining room. Tattered or stained fabric needs a face-lift. Recovering the surface is much more practical then replacing the piece altogether, or hiring someone else to do it for you. The local fabric store has a stellar selection of home décor fabrics—and don’t forget to check the remnant bins for discount fabrics. Think of the possibilities!
Making the piece more functional or appealing: Sometimes we look at a lackluster piece of furniture and realize all it needs is some softening. Yes, furniture can be as unapproachable as some people. Feel it out. Is it cold, stiff, drab, or about to put a splinter in your rear? Time for a comfy upgrade.
