If you're new to online shopping or wary about how safe it is, try a small purchase from a household-name retailer and see how it goes. You're likely to be pleasantly surprised. And you'll find that online shopping adds a valuable weapon to your arsenal as a smart consumer.
5. Around the House: Everyday Spending
Everyday spending is the prime culprit of needlessly wasting money. Some of the easiest spending cuts to make with the least pain will help you become financially FIT, as discussed in Chapter 1, "Financial FITness." Those areas are in food, insurance, and telecommunications, or FIT. However, other areas of daily spending are accomplices.
The common thread throughout this type of spending is that you pay over and over again, day after day, often without giving it much thought. Small one-time wastes of money aren't harmful, and frankly, aren't worth bothering about. But with repeated spending, even small savings grow in magnitude. They can be as expensive as the biggest one-time purchases you make all year.
Heating and cooling your home is a prime example. When it's cold, you need heat. When it's hot, you need air conditioning. For the most part, these are not optional. So, many people stop there, throwing up their hands and resigning themselves to paying the cost, whatever it is.
That's a mistake.
True, you have to pay for heating and cooling, but you can be smart about it and save a lot of money. The same is true for buying gasoline, cable TV service, or prescription drugs. Few people are able or willing to cut out these expenses altogether, but you can reduce them.
This chapter will help.
