The Good and Bad of Being

Your Own Water, Power and

Sanitation Company

Some of the below information is covered in greater detail in my Going Off The Grid book, but I feel I need to include it, as without it this section could get a little confusing. Also, I want to share more specifics of the lessons I’ve learned with my system, including some changes I’ve made to it.

Humans have been using sun, wind and water as sources of free, clean power for thousands of years. Think of sailboats, sundials and dams as long-used examples of how these earth-given resources have been—and in many cases still are—used. But throughout mankind’s history, and still today, there are entrepreneurs, politicians and others who have figured out how to sell and regulate something that’s actually free.

Here’s a perfect example of just how powerful the sun is: Every day, it produces 35,000 times the amount of the total energy required by all who currently use electricity! Plus, it’s 100% green and free.

There’s no better way to become self-sufficient than to take advantage of these ancient and unlimited power sources. Sure, they may not be as efficient as our modern power grid, but they’re a great way to take one more step away from the unwanted control imposed upon us by government regulations and the increasingly influential grip of privatized utility companies.

When it comes to living off the grid, the steepest learning curve is for creating, managing and running your own utility company. I know for me, even after reading several books I was still pretty clueless. After five years, I’m just starting to feel comfortable with my alternative energy and remote infrastructure knowledge and skills. This is one aspect of the lifestyle that’s incredibly individualistic, as there are several factors and variables. Most of us cobble together a basic system, and then continually tinker with it as we figure out our requirements and/or add more creature comforts.

This is where I list all of my infrastructure/alternative energy components and products. Trust me, this will save you a lot of time and guesswork when you’re first starting out.
