Mops Hacker, leader of the Dog Revolution, spent his early life with Jedediah Arch. One of the descendants of the few Americans who had joined the town of Rankstadt in the early years, Mops’s master was the one citizen of Rankstadt who spoke English, since the others had for generations been brought up to speak only German. Judging from the style of writing in Mops’s diary, his master’s collection of books must have dated from the late eighteenth century and included a Bible. We do not know why the collection included nothing newer—perhaps because those old books, being considered the most valuable, were the most carefully preserved—but we can only guess at this. We do know for certain that they were the only English-language books still existing in Rankstadt during our lifetime.

Mops was the only dog belonging to Arch, and so he grew up in relative isolation, and for most of his childhood he was very attached to his master.

At the age of six he began to attend the Dogs’ Grammar School, but immediately established a reputation as a poor student and a troublemaker, which was to stay with him throughout his youth.

The following excerpts are from a diary that Mops began to keep at the age of thirteen. It was entirely written in English, which indicates it was meant to be secret. The numbering system is Mops’s own device. I have focused primarily on his social development, as he grew from a despised outcast into our race’s greatest leader. These excerpts will, I hope, provide some insight into the mind of the dog who at age seventeen was to lead the dogs into that bloody rebellion against the humans of Rankstadt which permanently changed the course of our race’s history.
