CHAPTER 25

Matt felt cold in the room. He heard the wind whistle in through the cracks. It was early morning, and the sun was just coming up. He could see the sun rays through the curtain blinds. The single bed had a thin mattress, and his duvet was threadbare. Matt pulled up the cover over his chin. He listened closely, but he couldn’t hear the man. Matt tried to speak to him, but he didn’t answer. Matt knew his parents were looking for him. He desperately wished he could see his mum and dad again.

It was good seeing Stuart. That made him hopeful. But when he called to Stuart he ignored Matt. Stuart acted strangely. He stared at Matt like he was seeing a ghost, then the man grabbed Stuart’s arm, and spoke to him. After that, Matt didn’t see Stuart.

And he didn’t want to see Stuart again. Matt was so drowsy when he was taken from home, he didn’t know what was happening. But when he opened his eyes, he knew Stuart was carrying him downstairs. Stuart said they were going on an adventure. They went up on the apple tree in the garden, and then over the fence. Matt stayed on Stuart’s back. The man helped Stuart to put Matt in the car. Then Matt fell asleep in the car again.

This wasn’t an adventure anymore. Matt didn’t like this place. He didn’t know what was happening. He felt Stuart and the man were strange, and bad. But Matt knew the man. He was nice before. Why was he acting so weird now?

Matt was glad of one thing – he wasn’t in the cage anymore. The man had put him in this room upstairs in the farmhouse. The building was in a terrible state. The wooden floor had holes, and cobwebs hung everywhere. The floor felt cold under his bare feet last night. He didn’t sleep well, but it was still better than the cage.

Matt listened for a while. The sunlight was now obscured by clouds, and the wind still remained. Matt could hear water dripping somewhere. But he couldn’t hear any footsteps. He remembered the TV show where the boy and girl escaped from the castle. They did it while the monster was sleeping. Could he do the same?

Matt took the covers off and got up. The floor creaked as he stepped on it. There was a chair and desk in front of the window. Matt lifted the blind and peered out. There was a courtyard below, and the barn opposite the farmhouse. The barn doors were shut. Matt craned his neck and saw a car, but it was hidden behind what looked like a shed. He could see it from up here, but anyone coming up to the farmhouse would miss it.

He put on his clothes. Then he opened the door a crack. He could see another two rooms, and both doors were shut. The bathroom door was open, and Matt went in there to wee. He didn’t flush the toilet.
