I wake up feeling like a tube is jostling between my legs. When I open my eyes, it’s dark except for a single lamp on the nightstand. Dallas is kneeling next to the bed and studying a bag of fluid.

“What are you doing?” I ask, but it’s not just about the bag. I want to know what he is doing with me, and why I’m here.

“You’ve been too sick to get up for a while now, so we needed to insert a catheter.” Who is he talking about? What we? “But I need to get you up and moving today, ok? I’ll help you.”

“I mean, what are you doing with me?” I ask, my voice raspy and throat shredded.

“Etta, you were attacked. Do you remember anything?”

I knit my brows together. I do remember. I remember everything. My heart rate picks up, and my doughy eyes fill with tears. When I try to get up, it’s useless, and the pain quickly drains all the fight out of me.

“Etta, you’re safe now. I promise,” he quickly interjects, taking my hands and holding them snugly in his. “Who did this? You keep telling me the dark soul did it, what does that mean?” He is looking at me so intensely it makes me wonder what else I’ve been saying in my delirium. I slowly shake my head. I can’t explain dark souls to him, not now and not ever. “What day is it?” I ask instead.

“It’s Thursday. Do you want me to call your family and let them know you are ok?” Thursday? How can it be Thursday?

“I don’t have any family,” I say flatly. “I need my car.” The thought of my car in the parking lot of The Hole, full of drug paraphernalia, coats me in a wash of anxiety.

“I will take care of all that. What about work? And school? Who do I need to contact so they don’t report you missing?”

“There are drugs in my car,” is all I say in answer to his battery of questions. His eyes widen, and he pulls his phone from his back pocket. I close my eyes against the fatigue but listen to his phone conversation.

“Hey, it’s me. Her car is at work. We don’t have any keys, so I’m going to need it towed back here.” There is a pause while he listens to whoever is on the other line. “And, Joey—I’m going to need it cleaned of any complications, but you need to preserve any fingerprints or possible DNA, do you understand?”

As I doze off, I wonder what the hell he is talking about.
