Part III of the Breaking the Cycles model, shown on page 47, is about finding security through trauma healing and transforming relationships. It is based on a revolutionary paradox: that we become more secure when we promote the security of our neighbors, friend and enemy alike. The ideas presented here are neither perfected nor complete. They are simply part of the quest to find a life-giving way to respond to violence and trauma.

Moving beyond fight, flight, or freeze reactions requires attention to healing body, mind, and spirit. Martha Cabrera describes the need for “affective and spiritual reconstruction” for individuals, communities, and societies that have experienced violence. Peter Levine speaks of the resilience, creativity, cooperative spirit, and sense of triumph experienced by those who heal. Paula Gutlove and others point out the importance of psychosocial healing; that is, psychological and social-support activities that help societies function in stable and healthy ways in the wake of conflict.45

A paradox: we become more secure when we promote the security of our friends and enemies.
