Grimké shows the force is so strong that Rachel decides not to marry and procreate, given that racial hatred might one day kill her children. This fictive characterâs choice not to marry should demonstrate to white women readers just how insidious racial violence is for Black women. Home, love, and family form the triad that links many Black and white women, but Grimké writes about a character who chooses a nontraditional path. Black and white worlds collide for a disastrous outcome in Rachel, in contrast to the more hopeful Black life portrayed in Beryl Westonâs Ambition, Clancy Street, and Of One Blood.
