Alternatives with a sporting chance of replacing the extant, clearly outdated and inept ways of doing politics (and especially the present model of democracy) are precisely the things which the ‘square people’ (a phrase coined by Thomas Friedman), pitching tents for a few days – or a few weeks at the utmost – on Tahrir, Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Taksim, Bolotnaya, Rothschild, Puerta del Sol, Syntagma, Altamira or Zuccotti squares, parks or boulevards, are organically incapable of inventing – and even less of forcing the political bodies to embrace.

None of the major protest movements has come out with a platform for changing the world – or even the economy. In this sense, we may be looking less at a possible engine of revolutionary activity against capitalism than at one of capitalism's safety valves […] The protests everywhere succeeded in disrupting the political status quo, but they also helped the elites to relegitimize their power by, in effect, demonstrating that there is no real alternative to them […] It is a moment, not a movement. It is an explosion of political subjectivity, and like any explosion, it by definition cannot be sustained.12
