Twelve

In Travis’ bedroom, Cassidy closed the door for privacy and saw that he’d placed her overnight bag on a lounge chair in the far corner of the room. The bedroom itself had nice carpeting, a few scattered braided rugs for accents, warm red oak furniture, and a big king-sized bed with a brass head and footboard.

The bed covers were black and pewter with a black throw folded at the bottom. A big military trunk sat in front of the bed with a couple of spare pillows on top. At a guess, she bet he used the trunk as storage for sheets and blankets.

Crossing the room, she got what she needed out of her bag, took everything to the bathroom, removed her glasses, and began undressing. It didn’t take long and though she could see the start of a bruise on her hip, she felt confident it wasn’t serious.

Travis’ shower was actually similar to hers, had a see-thru door, big enough for two, with brown, tan, and beige floor tiles and gold fixtures. Going to the small bathroom window, she carefully lifted a sand-colored curtain. Though her astigmatism made everything a little blurry, she could see that on either side of the windowsill were two small pen-shaped devices that had a low-level red light shining between them.

She didn’t test it, but she guessed that if something broke the red stream, it set off the alarm. Relieved, she stepped back and carefully lowered the curtain so as not to break the line.

Turning around, she noticed Travis had placed her toiletry bag on the sink, along with a brown bath towel and a washcloth. Relaxing due to his kindness, she turned on the water and undressed. Incredibly, taking a shower had the same calming effect as eating chicken noodle soup, helping to normalize her equilibrium and not feel as afraid or angry.

Fifteen minutes later, she wrapped herself up in the big brown towel and took a few minutes to brush and floss her teeth. Her hair was thick and wavy so it took time to detangle it before she started the dryer.

Once her hair was relatively dry, she applied deodorant and put on panties and a big, comfy nightshirt that fell to her mid-thigh, checking her hip again. The bruise hadn’t worsened and was about the size of a fist. Her elbow stung a little so she searched her bag for a small tube of aloe-based ointment and dotted some on the rug burn.

Done, she put on her glasses, tidied up the bathroom, and tucked her bag under the sink. It was weird, but she was able to transition quickly to the change of residence, even though she knew it was only until Travis and his security team deemed it safe for her to go back to her place.

She was actually grateful for the chance to stay where she was comfortable, but if it came down to it she’d go into protective custody until Travis and the authorities deemed it safe to live her life in peace.
