CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Lucas stood in the cold shadow the Harrods building threw across Hans Crescent, looking at the yellow-tinted roads in his little A–Z street atlas.

“Where would the guy have gone from here?” asked Mia. “Someone waiting in a car?”

“I don’t like a car,” said Lucas. “Not in central London.”

“What about the subway?” said Lenny.

“There’s a pedestrian tunnel to Knightsbridge just up on the corner,” said Mia.

“He could be lost in the crowd within seconds.”

Lucas looked out toward Brompton Road and rubbed his hand across his close-cropped hair. Then he turned the other way and stared out into the middle distance.

“There’s a problem with that,” he said.

“I know,” said Mia. “The police said they stopped the Piccadilly line trains within minutes.”

“Maybe he didn’t know that would happen, at least not that fast,” said Lenny.

“That’s not the problem.”

“So what is?” asked Mia.

“His mates,” said Lucas.

“What mates?” said Lenny.

“The guys from the car,” Lucas mumbled, thinking. Then he snapped back. “Assuming they were all together, and I think it’s a fair chance.”

“I agree,” said Lenny. “So what of them?”

“They didn’t go that way toward the Tube station. They went this way, down Hans Crescent. They headed south. Why would the anorak guy go the other way?”

“Separating after an operation isn’t the worst idea, tactically speaking.”

“Right. But then he could have gone out a number of other exits. The watch room is on the other side of the building. He could have followed the staff out onto the other side of the store or followed the crowds out onto Brompton Road, just as anonymous. But he didn’t. He stepped over me and came out the exit where the blast had happened. Why?”

“He wanted to see his handiwork?” said Mia.

“Not really his work—it was the two guys in the car. No, I think he came out this way because this was their getaway route. What if his mates were waiting for him?”

“Where?” asked Lenny.

“I don’t know.” Lucas glanced once more at his A–Z then started walking toward Basil Street. When he reached the corner, he consulted the street atlas again.

“What are you thinking?” asked Lenny.

“What are the getaway options through London?”

Lenny looked at Mia, who worked it out: “Tube, but that was shut down. Car, but like you said, this is a heavily congested part of town. So you walk?”

“Sure, you walk, but not forever. You want to get well away. Maybe even as far as Ireland. Only we know they didn’t go to Ireland because at least one of them is still here. I’d want to get away fast and far. Can’t trust the Tube or the bus for the same reason as a car: too much traffic. So how?”

“There isn’t a way,” she said.

“There is. There’s an open, easily accessed route out of town that’s almost traffic-free.”

Mia bunched up her forehead. “I don’t know of one.”

Lucas smiled. “Yeah, you do.”

He tapped the street atlas, and Mia and Lenny leaned in. Mia’s mouth dropped open.

“The River Thames?”

“If you had a boat, you could be
