Chapter Sixty-Five

Ayoa

Firmly, I tore the sword aside, thereby tossed the animal away from me, and quickly followed up with the axe. Cut in two halves, the fox could no longer threaten me.

This was no normal fox behavior. So I picked up the cadaver and bit into it. No, this didn’t taste good. But I found traces of my nanos.

Thanks to my axe strike, I had to bite the second half, too. Yuck. Only—before any other animal could feed on the cadaver and thus acquire my nanos, I instead took them myself.

Now I had a hot lead. I had already found out that animal bodies weren’t ideal for my nanos—after a while, the animal calmed down, they deactivated, then the spook was over. Those here had still been active, so the fox had been freshly bitten. This also meant that the biter still had to be in the area.

My nocturnal trip had already paid off. I fetched a broken-off branch I just had climbed across and leaned it upright against a tree to mark the spot. Otherwise, I’d hardly be able to find the fox again the next morning and show it to Joakim.

Oh yes, I had planned that. I’d show him almost anything—except for the method with which I regained my nanos. There he didn’t need to watch me.

But all other facts might help him to understand better what was happening here, and they might set the Church at rest. Regarding humans, they might assume sins and demons as cause, but who would attribute animals with the ability to commit a sin? If it was something unholy—if it could affect innocent animals, it could affect innocent people, who didn’t have to be guilty of sin. This logic I wanted to suggest to him.

I felt like spitting out. Phew, the fox tasted as ugly as it smelled! But I had never considered it advisable to spread my saliva, even if it contained no nanos. So I conquered my distaste. Perhaps the farmer would have some goat cheese to cover the taste.

These thoughts kept me busy while I continued to sneak around the farm in growing circles. I couldn’t simply push them away, although I’d better have directed my attention to my surroundings alone.

Thus, I didn’t immediately notice how the background noise around me had changed.

I could partially forgive myself this lapse, as the noises simply faded—but I reproached myself anyway. Of course not for long, as that would have been another distraction, but long enough so that the affected could approach me up to a few steps before I noticed him—and that again was owed to the wind’s direction.

He stank.

Before I could evaluate the reason for that, I first had to dodge his first attack, then I smacked my axe’s flat side against his head. When the hoped-for effect appeared—he was stunned for a moment—I wrapped my arms around him and drilled my teeth into his throat. Heroically, I thereby ignored his smell.

This opponent was weak and clumsy, he didn’t offer resistance, and once my nanos had sedated him and then returned to me, he had no chance anyway.
