Alice kept misting up a portion of her car window with loud exhales. Her fingertip made squeaky noises as she drew a turtle, then a rabbit, then a tree.

“Alice,” Vera said, but Bastian made a gesture for her to leave it.

“I don’t like this music,” Alice stated.

Bastian absorbed that information, holding down a smile.

“Do you have very strong opinions about everything?” he asked, eyes on Vera’s.

She knew what he meant. Like mother, like daughter. She rolled her eyes at him but held down her own smile, as she focused out the window. She thought it was better to consider the road up ahead, the way the streetlamps flashed by, the threat of rain from darkened skies. It was better than considering the dimples that appeared whenever he almost smiled at her. Now that she was allowing herself to relax around him, she had the unnerving urge to rest her head on his shoulder and sleep for a year.

She yawned, covering it with one hand.

“Don’t you have any other music?” Alice complained from the back.

“Alice, please,” Vera said sharply.

“I just wanted something funner,” Alice muttered, unimpressed.

“Something more fun,” Vera corrected.

“Hey,” Bastian said. “Chill out.”

She wanted to bite back, let him know in no uncertain terms that he couldn’t tell her what to do, but he was right. Where he seemed to make her into the type of woman who would happily step into a glass box and wait to be kissed awake, her daughter kept tugging hard on her fear. She knew she shouldn’t take it out on Alice, but she had to see this thing through. Having her daughter hug her as they stopped to pick her up, getting that shower of affection and trust, had felt like a knife in her gut.

If anything happened to her kid, she wouldn’t be able to live with it. It would kill her.

“Sorry, darling,” she said, looking over her seat at Alice, who was drawing a ladybird on the freshly misted window.

“It’s okay, mommy,” Alice said, not really paying attention to what mommy was apologizing for.

Bastian switched between the radio stations until he landed on a channel playing upbeat pop music. Alice yelled a loud ‘yayyyy’, Bastian throwing a satisfied glance in the rear-view mirror.

Vera couldn’t keep the smile down, but there was also a different sort of fear, watching this insanely attractive man, whom she’d once slept with and felt all sorts of things around, interact with and be nice to her child.

Was he doing it on purpose?

But then he bopped his head in the silliest way, jiving along with whatever the young woman on the radio was wailing about, and she laughed.

“You like it,” she teased.

“I love this song. What’re you talking about?”

And he started singing along, knowing every single word. She wanted to kiss him then. Very much. But she didn’t.

He pulled into the garage to let them off safely. The elevator did go straight into their apartment so there wouldn’t be any stranger danger in a darkened hallway. She should feel okay taking Alice into a space they’d gotten to know over the last few weeks.
