Chapter Five

Linnea looked at the man sleeping next to her. Sam’s hand rested on her thigh. He’d asked her to stay, but when the kiss ended he hadn’t cuddled her next to his body. Instead he stared at her questioningly in those moments before his eyes closed for the night. She didn’t know what he silently wanted to know.

Linnea concentrated on his breathing for a long time, making sure he would not wake back up. When she was convinced he wouldn’t wake up, she slid her leg out from under his hand. The light was dim and she saw more the impression of his features than his actual face. For a moment, she hesitated. Yesterday, she would have said this man was an arrogant doctor who treated her like every other person of power she’d ever met. Earlier today, she would have said he was a devious doctor with possible evil tendencies who was up to something shady along with the others on his plane. When he’d kissed her, she would have said there was no possible way this man was evil. Now, as he slept, so sweet and trusting, she didn’t think him devious or arrogant. Had she been wrong about him? Or were her emotions getting in the way of her judgment?

It was wiser to mistrust him. Safer too.

Crossing naked to the wall monitor, she hit the setting to dim the screen. As she suspected, the unit had higher security access than the one in her room. She mouthed as she typed, “Privacy Code Six.”

The unit brought up information on the code. Basically, it meant no one could discuss anything with anyone. She frowned, not finding the definition very helpful.

Next, she typed, “Plane 33 incident.”

A long report appeared. She scanned over it to get the basic idea of what had happened. When Plane 33 visited on a mission similar to Linnea’s, the doctors tried to steal copies of all of 187’s records. That was bad enough, but they didn’t stop there. They tried to transport some virus samples through the portal. Unfortunately, the viruses weren’t completely secured for transport and they were accidently released on the other side. Plane 33 was nearly wiped out when the virus mutated. The population’s immune systems weren’t capable of fighting off the disease. Report notes at the bottom of the file indicated Plane 33 blamed 187 for releasing the virus as punishment for taking the medical records. Divinity Corporation acquitted Plane 187 from all wrongdoing and Plane 33 was sealed off permanently.

Two questions from her eavesdropping answered. But what did a privacy code and an old incident have to do with keeping them trapped on this plane?

Linnea glanced over her shoulder. Sam hadn’t moved. She swallowed nervously before snooping deeper.

After a month of learning their system, she found her way through his files with minimal trouble. Only, when she tried to open the documents, the computer requested a bio-scan. She frowned, resetting the device as if she’d never touched it.

“What are you doing?” Sam’s voice was sleepy.
