CHAPTER 62
The relentless, vast wasteland stretched endlessly on either side, of the locomotive of the Freedom Expressâs in its headlong charge barreling down the tracks carrying what was left of the once grand touring train and the Caballeros. The wheels kicked up a cloud that mingled with the acrid smoke billowing from the engine, creating a haze trailing in its wake.
After fleeing the quicksand beds, Dogget and Carlos had hastily relocated their prisoner to the locomotive. With his hands tied behind his back, Davis had been forced to the rear of the cab, where the glow of the firebox accentuated the tightness on his face. Behind the trio, young Gabriel Garcia, trying to hide his nervousness over the failed mission that was sure to engender The Countess's wrath, aimed his gun at the engineer, ensuring he kept the engine moving at top speed. The aged and weathered veteran railroad man stared ahead, holding the train steady, his fear masked by stoic resolve and the knowledge it was in his best interest not to look back at anything transpiring behind him.
Dogget, a looming figure even when not in such a confined space, emanated a dangerous energy. With Davis on his knees, vulnerable before the firebox, the outlaw seemed to grow even larger. The knife he casually played with caught glints of the furnace fire, each reflection a sign of the control he wielded and the lust of violence that was his second nature.
"Speak, ranger. Start from the beginning. I want to know everything. Where did you come from? How are you teamed with Nash Riker, and what the hell was that thing we saw back there?!" His gruff words, laced with threat, overrode the roar of the locomotive, mirroring the predatory glint in his eyes.
The captive man swallowed hard, a bead of sweat trickling down his dirt-streaked face. "I'm not telling you a damn thing. Besides, by the look of you, I reckon you wouldn't understand. I'm guessinâ your brain cavity wouldn't make a drinkin' cup for a canary," he rasped out.
The flash of Dogget's blade left a slash down the man's left temple, setting off a gush of bright red blood. Davis cursed but said nothing more.
Carlos stepped closer. He addressed his compatriot without taking his eyes off the prisoner. âI will try.â The command hung heavily in the steam-filled air.
âListen, amigo. I know this man. He enjoys inflicting pain. Spare yourself the agony and tell us what you know,â Carlos said, turning to their captive.
Despite the pain, Davisâs spirit was unbroken, and he spat back, âAinât nothing to tell. I never heard of you Caballeros till last night, but I know enough now to call you horseshit scum.â
Carlos hesitated, sensing the storm about to erupt, and seeing no other option, he withdrew. As he stepped away, the menacing bruteâs intentions became terrifyingly clear. Davis felt the overpowering grip on his head, pushing him closer to the furnace. The proximity of the corporalâs face to the searing heat spoke of a promise of pain.
