CHAPTER 30

As he drew near the town, for the first time in spell, did he allow his mind to turn to the hunt for Stacia Giannini. He was eager to track her down partly because he wanted to see her behind bars, and though he might wish to deny it, he was interested in seeing her because she intrigued him. When he had first been pressed to fill in for an ailing fellow agent, he had no idea he would be swept into the world of whatever these Visionaries were.

After the auction where he had won the plans to reproduce a foolproof version of the money order press used by the U.S. Government. She had admitted obtaining the schematics for such a press by photographing the originals after breaking into government offices. It wasn't just the boldness of the act, though. It was the camera she had used that she had mentioned was so portable it could be carried on her person. Riker had been amazed that it also didn't employ glass plates but instead used something called paper negatives, which Riker had seen with his own eyes.

When questioned about the camera, Stacia conceded they had obtained them from an inventor who was years ahead of anyone else in the field of photography. When pressed about what became of the man, Giannini had grown visibly uncomfortable and had deflected that her father and brother handled such matters. The men in her family sounded dangerous to Riker, yet it was another family member, not them that intrigued Riker almost as much as Stacia.

The alluring thief with the silver hair and supple body had revealed that she had a sister who, if she was to be believed, was a genius’s genius. It had been the sister that built a working version of the camera based on the plans Stacia had stolen. That, however, was the tip of the iceberg. The woman wasn’t just skilled in perfecting the work of others but indulged in her own creations.

The icing on the cake was Stacia’s claim their family was descended from the legendary genius da Vinci and the sister was on the same level of intelligence as the storied inventor to the point where their father had nicknamed the girl Davi. Most troubling of all was it sounded as if the family were putting the young woman’s brilliance to good use knowing Stacia, Davi, and her family were working on something in Utah the thief had boasted could change the world. Whatever it was, Riker needed to find out what, and the only way to do that was to track down the woman. It was a shame she operated on the other side of the law. Anastacia Giannini was one damn fine beautiful woman. Whether that proved to be a blessing or a curse for her after Riker put her in prison remained to be seen.

Thinking about her motives, Stacia professed she was from a group of people interested in bringing the advances of the world of tomorrow home to today.
