According to Castle, starting with the first time the special ‘M’ appears the reader needed to jot down the second letter over from it and thereafter every time the special character appeared to form the message. She had asked what if it were a letter like ‘O’ and with a laugh he said most avoided using that as the special letter but if they did an innocent-looking loop could be made at the top with an upsweep. After explaining he had encouraged her to decipher the message. Doing as he instructed, McKenna was easily able to make out the message writing down ever second letter after the ‘M.’

As her mind grew fuzzy from the long day, the bar fight, and even a small residual of her intoxication, she found her eyes beginning to droop, Still, McKenna remembered asking him in amazement how he was quickly able to put a message together so that the letter ‘M’ fell in just the right places to spell out the message. Modestly he said he and his brother had been doing ciphers since they were five.

Ciphers, it seemed, had been a favorite pastime for their mother, a highly intellectual woman, who had been frustrated at all the doors closed to her by her gender. Harlan relayed how bad he felt that she passed without ever having a chance to realize her full potential. He had become somber for a moment but recovered with a smile and shrugged off his ability to formulate the coded message in seconds saying that a lifetime of practice had made perfect.

McKenna had agreed that it had indeed while silently having a better understanding after hearing about the barriers that had restrained his mother as to why he so easily supported her desire as a woman wanting to join the Marshals. In her mind, she could even now hear Castle going on to say again these were the most basic and simplistic of codes and ciphers and that he could show her a genuinely complex one. Then, with an embarrassed groan, she could also recollect what she had said.

I would prefer … perhaps … if you were to show me something else, Harlan.

It had been an embarrassing come-on that only her younger self could have blurted out after she had been struggling with how to best drop a hint that she was his for the taking if he desired. McKenna's lips turned up in a smile, remembering that such a blatant, clumsy attempt had indeed worked. She wanted so much to relive the lovemaking that had enveloped the couple next, but sleep came for her, and her mind faded into oblivion, taking the memory of Harlan Castle with it.
