A look passed between them, and then he smiled. Castle had explained that she was looking at one of the most basic of codes. On the surface, it looked like a romantic letter or telegraph, but if you were looking for information regarding the location of an enemy, you just had to know how to read it and what to be looking for. Each letter at the start of the sentence was a clue, and the final sentence always had to include a number somewhere related to projected troop strength.

Using the pencil to point to the first letter of each sentence, he revealed the actual message.

Troop Movement East of Richmond, one hundred men strong.

Suitably impressed, she had asked him to do another one, though she remembered she had also wanted to buy herself some more time before working up the nerve to make a pass at him.

In his element, Castle quickly scribbled some more in the journal before showing it to her. The major had told her this example was one that could only be done in written hand. If someone knew what to be looking for, it was a simplistic way to get a message to someone.

“It’s called the Every Second Letter Code. You see with this type of code one specific letter is picked and the writer adds a subtle flair to the end of it. In this case I used ‘M’ for McKenna.” He said with a wink that had sent butterflies churning in her stomach. “Though the first time the special character is used is always starting in the third paragraph. It’s just another tip off to the receiver that the letter contains a coded message. Here take a look.”

His index finger picked out the first time the letter ‘M’ appeared in the third paragraph and there had indeed been a subtle upswing to the bottom of the ‘M.’
