CHAPTER 20

“Well?”

There was no disguising the urgency in Reynolds’ voice as he closed the door of an empty storage bunker in a secluded corner of the fort, behind the just-entered bogus Major Armbruster. Mac Dupré tore the hat from his head and jammed it down on the doorknob as a makeshift hanger before turning back to the man masquerading as Colonel Guthrie. Only moments before, he had stabled his horse, following a ride out of the valley, through the canyon bisected by Donnor’s Chasm and into the foothills, overlooking the sweeping prairie beyond them.

“I’ll be saddle-sore for a month after that ride. I swear I picked the worst mount they had in this here livery. Nothing ace-high about that nag.”

Reynolds’ foot tapped against the earthen floor of the unused storeroom as he felt a flush come over his body, eager for Dupré to divulge the outcome of his trip. Earlier, after the conference with the oblivious officers and the interloping Military Marshal, he had sent Dupré out on a preplanned mission. The only tweak due to the unplanned presence of the lawman was Reynolds’s insistence that Dupré return after dark so Riker would have time to complete his survey with Captain Bauer and be less likely to see that “Armbruster” had left the fort and come back. There was no need to get Riker curious and start asking questions. As Dupré’s lips spread into a crooked grin, a dose of relief came over Reynolds, knowing it was going to be welcome news.

“I saw the signal. Brother Sandoval has come through on his part of the plan!”

Reynolds had been right; the news was as fine as cream gravy, top-notch in any book. His old friend had successfully managed to wrangle an unruly savage injun into an alliance with the brotherhood that would allow the army payroll to be theirs. Such a score for The Countess would surely result in him being awarded the extra bonus she would occasionally sprinkle in. He would use the extra money to book the finest accommodations on a steamer out of San Diego. Docking in San Francisco, he would go on a sex and alcohol-fueled binge for a week straight. He had a fancy for the Chinese whores that could be found there, and only the best would do. Likely, he would stay on at the expensive home, one of three in different cities he had purchased with the Villanuevas’ money over the years, for a while until he received word from The Countess that his services would be needed again.

“Well done, brother,” he said, honestly glad that there had been no hitch. The three El Caballeros in formulating the plan had decided that after Sandoval met with Spitting Snake, Dupré was to take a position on a hilltop with a view of the prairie and await the signal. Every hour on the hour, Sandoval would arrange to have smoke signals rising up to be viewed by Dupré whenever he might arrive on the overlook. If the smoke was white, then it was a go with the Cheyenne.
