Signallers in Brunei made the best of the confusion of the past two days. Batteries and charging engines for the type 62 radio sets were mislaid somewhere between Singapore and Brunei. The weight of their responsibility dawned on them as they prepared for the Limbang operation.

‘Unlike on exercises, no excuses could now be tolerated’, said the signaller. ‘This time, there would be no wash-up for me to blame out-of-date equipment if communications failed, no detailed investigations in two days time into the failure of essential equipment to arrive by air, no calm official or unofficial criticism of the exercise planning. The 62 just had to work.’

‘I crossed my fingers. They were to stay crossed for a long time.’

If the sets failed, ‘we would fail to get anywhere in this roadless, trackless country, or at the best, grind slowly on from point to point, never taking bold leaps, never getting the rebels off balance’.

‘It was only as I was giving the Company signallers their final instructions that I suddenly realised that this was no exercise but the real thing. How tough it was going to be, no-one knew.’55
