Jo’s husband, Will, walked in. He was a tall man. At first glance he appeared to be handsome, with a square jaw, a thick mane of hair, and deep set eyes. He dressed well too. Lily smiled at him as he entered, but was unnerved as his gaze lingered upon her. Lily was unsure if this was actually happening or if this was just a trick of her mind. She was uncertain if she was actually seeing this, or if it was just something that was borne from her own paranoia. Will leaned in and whispered in Jo’s ear, before taking a seat himself.

“What can I help you with?” he asked.

“I just thought you could tell us your experience of what happened. Did you see anyone suspicious?” Chloe asked.

Will adjusted his position in his seat and wore a thoughtful look. “When Jo called me I went as quickly as I could. I arrived and I did see a shadowy figure in the distance, but I couldn’t make out anything.”

“Not even if they were male or female?” Chloe asked.

Will shook his head. “I’m afraid not. They must have been wearing a hoody or something. I suppose I should have chased them, but I was concerned about my wife. I just wanted to make sure that she was alright. I’m sorry. If I had thought more clearly then, I might have been able to get my hands on them. It was so foggy I wouldn’t even be able to tell you if it was a man or a woman!” he said. After every few words he kept glancing toward Lily. There was a nervous laugh, and he kept gnawing his lip as he spoke. Perhaps it was just because Lily was in a nervous state already, but it set alarm bells ringing in her mind.

“Are you well Will? You seem to be a little unnerved,” Chloe said. Lily breathed with relief when Chloe asked this question, as it confirmed that not all of Lily’s instincts had been compromised.

Will ran long, slender fingers through his hair. When Lily looked at him more closely she almost sensed that he was trying not to look at her almost as much as he gazed at her. He smiled and again laughed nervously. “Sorry, I’m sorry, it’s just that I’m a private man you see and I’m not used to all of this attention. I only really want to make sure that my wife is okay.” He leaned toward Chloe and lowered his voice. “I would also prefer it if any… revelations in the case would pass through me before Jo, to protect her from anything unsavory, you understand. She has been shaken by this enough already and I would not wish to put her under any further distress,” he said.

“Of course,” Chloe said sharply. “I believe that’s all for now. Thank you for coming in,” she said, turning to Jo, “and I’ll be in contact if I need anything else.”

Jo and Will rose. Will reached out to support his wife, although before he left he turned around again to cast one last smile at Lily.
