5: Defying Gravity

T he next day.

Sunday.

My eyes popped open to find myself already staring at a clock.

Not my clock. But a clock.

It was the one tied to the Roomba, who at this moment was bumping into the foot of my bookcase.

Like an optimistic moth, it was attempting to nibble at the bottom shelf row of dictionaries, atlases, anthologies and other highbrow books I never used but kept for appearance's sake. I wish I knew binary for 'please go ahead'. I needed an excuse to get rid of them. Then I could move the growing origami collection from my window.

I rolled from my side onto my front, my face burrowing into my pillow as I sought to replicate the sweet darkness of sleep that had just escaped me. A light remained etched in my retinas. The red digits of the digital alarm clock, branding my mind's eye like a hot iron.

Still with face superglued to my pillow, I raised my hips and brought up my knees, tummy eventually pressing down against my thighs. It could have been a posture of reverence, if not for my arms splayed out parallel to the wild strands of my bed hair. Flexibility was not one of my strong suits. I did splits like a deck of cards still in their shrink wrapping. But when I woke up, Olympic gymnasts took note. My body was a glossary of freestyle poses, my favourite being this one where my limbs were ready to spring myself from bed, if only my face would budge from the pillow.

I eventually shuffled off, knees sliding down the edge of my mattress until I was forced to make use of my soles. Half my duvet formed a red carpet on the floor. I left both it and my pillow behind to crumple in peace.

Three of my five senses opening to the world, I charitably nudged the Roomba with my feet to get it moving again, then headed out of my room.

A click and a hum met me. The bathroom light burning with the luminosity of the sun and the extractor fan waking up like a slumbering giant. I kept my dominant eye closed, examining my reflection with my weaker one as I begged for that itch on my cheek to only be some undiagnosed medical condition and not the start of a pimple.

Once done, I washed my face, brushed my teeth, and then washed my face again. I considered straightening my hair. But for once, my ponytail was more appropriate. Laziness wasn't my excuse. Professionalism was. I probably still had to roll it into a bun, though.

I took in a deep breath, then fixed it into a low knot.

That would do. I hope.

Hair assembled, face washed and itch smothered in aloe vera, I returned to my bedroom.

I rarely thanked past me for anything. Quite the opposite. Whereas future me was my hero and idol, past me was the slob eating ice cream on the couch. This time it was different. Past me had displayed the foresight to prepare my clothes for the next day.
