Chapter 13

Lilliane was eating lunch when her phone vibrated in her pocket. She pulled it out, looked at the caller ID, and smiled. Alyssa had called twice now. Once, she left a message; the second time, a text. She loved the woman dearly.

“You’re worried for nothing, you know. I’m doing just fine and dandy now,” Lilliane said as a greeting. “The students are very well behaved and they seem to be extremely smart.”

“They are. They have to be rated high on the tests they take at an early age to be admitted. They have a waiting list a mile long to get in there. I already have Connor on it.”

Lilliane looked up when one of the other teachers asked to sit with her. She nodded. “I would bet you’d have no problem getting him in if you worked at it. I’m having fun. I didn’t…I wasn’t sure…”

When she didn’t…couldn’t finish, Alyssa seemed to understand. “Shamus said you’d been ready to give up teaching. I had hoped that this would sort of jump start you back into the game. You love it too much to give it up because of somebody’s stupidity.”

“I know.” Lilliane looked at the man sitting with her and smiled. “I guess that’ll never work out. I want to talk to you about his contract when I get home. It needs to end. And I was wondering if I could stay a bit longer before I decide what to do for myself?”

“Of course. You’re welcome to stay here for as long as you want, honey. And as for things working out, don’t worry about that part. I’ll take care of it right now. Just let this other thing get over with then we’ll go from there.”

After they hung up Lilliane decided that she was going to tell them to let Shamus go back to wherever. The longer he stayed, the harder it was going to be on her. She was already half in love with the man and she’d not known him all that long.

“You must be the substitute teacher for Caroline. She had a wedding to go to in California tomorrow. I’m Denver Garner and I teach Phys Ed.”

“Lilliane Waite. Yes, the children told me why I was here.” She opened her sandwich and started to put the hamburger together. “I’m really impressed with the overall school. How long has it been here?”

She wanted to pull her sweater on. The man kept staring at her breasts and she had the feeling he had her completely naked in his mind already. She tried to hunch over to make her large breasts seem smaller, but his short laugh made her realize he knew what she was doing.

“Ten years. I think it was built from some endowment program. Some old rich guy built it. Howard somebody… I think he wanted to make sure that kids got a good education in a safe place. I don’t care. It pays well and the kids are too rich to care if they get an education or not.
